"As we mourn Jackson’s passing, I want to name this quieter legacy: that in a country, and a church culture, where cruelty could masquerade as conviction, he chose to insist on the full humanity of queer people."

Why not? It's never too early to develop a healthy level of skepticism. A pox on any parent that doesn't teach their kids to think for themselves and question things from time to time.
"It’s hard not to look back and see how often

Jackson’s speech helped me separate faith from fear.
It helped me understand that dehumanization can
wear a cross, recognize that “righteousness” can
be a costume, and that compassion is often the
truer proof of belief than any shouted doctrine."
I lived the first 65ish of my current 76 years in Chicago so I well remember the Rev Jesse Jackson from the time he went to Hizzoner Richard J Daley and asked for some political responsibility......whereupon Daley promptly told him to go help his precinct captain, and Jackson went off on his own. (BTW, Obama did exactly that, became a ward healer, and he DID get elected President.)
Watching the Rev Jackson was part of my education in the Chicago Public School of Hard Knocks. I came to have a lot of understanding of, and a huge amount of respect for Rev Jackson. My most heartfelt sympathies to his family, his people, his neighborhood, his constituency, and all those who cherished him. May he rest in eternal peace and everlasting light shine upon him.
